The Heart

WHAT WE MEAN WHEN WE SAY ‘HEART’

Jesus Christ teaches that a good person brings good things out of the good stored up in his or her heart (Luke 6.45). My heart is the real me. A technical definition of my heart is who I am without direct effort. My church’s primary ministry objective is a rightly-formed heart. Another way of saying this is that I would become a Christ-like person.

The Qualities of a Rightly-Formed Heart

WE ARE WANDERING TOWARD THESE QUALITIES

Forming The Heart

ACTIVITIES LEADING TO A RIGHTLY-FORMED HEART

Forming the heart is a co-formational work I am blessed to have God do with me. My part in this is within my power and requires direct effort from me. Anything I do that requires direct effort is not the heart itself, but a formational activity where God will form my heart. For example, common formational activities include: living in community, reading scripture, liturgy, spiritual disciplines, etc.

The Outcomes of a Rightly-Formed Heart

LIVING AS A CHRIST-LIKE PERSON

The outcomes of my heart being rightly-formed are all the good things that will naturally be my life. As I am transformed into a Christ-like person I will naturally produce outcomes consistent with Jesus’ heart. A few examples of outcomes include: virtues, service, social justice, doctrine, a praying life, etc.
